Tipper: the lorry
A tipper is a rigid or articulated lorry with a hydraulic tipping body. It carries loose bulk — aggregates, sand, Type 1, asphalt/planings, or excavated spoil — and unloads by raising the body so the load slides out the back. In UK tipper haulage the common workhorse is the 8-wheeler (8×4) rigid, with artics used for bigger bulk runs. A tipper needs something to load it (a digger or loading shovel) and a clear area to tip.
Grab lorry: a tipper that loads itself
A grab lorry is a tipper fitted with a hydraulic grab crane (an articulated arm with a bucket or clamshell) behind the cab. Because it can reach out and scoop, it loads and unloads itself — no digger, no loading shovel. That makes it ideal where there's no plant on site, or where material has to be lifted over a wall, fence or hedge. The trade-off: it carries a bit less (the crane adds weight) and costs more per load. Every grab lorry is a tipper; not every tipper has a grab.
Muck-away: the job, not the lorry
Muck-away is the service of removing spoil, soil and construction waste from a site and taking it away for disposal or recycling. People say "book a muck-away," but that's a job description — the work is done by a tipper or a grab lorry depending on access. Because it moves controlled waste, the operator must be a registered waste carrier and carry the right transfer documentation.
