What is dead mileage?

Dead mileage (also called empty running) is any distance a truck covers without a paying load: repositioning empty from base to a plant, running between plants, or returning empty after a tip. It's invisible on an invoice but very visible on your fuel bill and your drivers' hours.

Why it matters more for tipper work

Tipper and tarmac work is short-haul and plant-driven. Loads change through the day, plants send you elsewhere at short notice, and a truck based in the wrong place racks up empty legs fast. A few extra empty miles per load, across a fleet, across a year, is a serious number.

Step one: measure it

You can't cut what you don't see. Capture, per truck and per shift: laden miles, empty miles, and any transfer to another plant. Once dead mileage is a number on a screen rather than a feeling, the worst offenders stand out immediately.
